My 5 Secrets To Glowing And Protected Skin

My hubby, Gary and I, had a blast teaching a summer skin care class this past Sunday at CycleOm in Little Italy.

He whipped up a batch of our yummy Tropical Coconut lip balms and I shared my juicy summer skin care secrets with the attendees.

I didn't want to leave you out of the loop, so here are my best sun care secrets so you can try them at home too...

1. Mother nature is incredible at providing natural sunscreen protection. Here are a few examples:

  • Shea Butter SPF 4-6
  • Coconut Oil SPF 4-6
  • Almond Oil SPF 5
  • Red Raspberry Seed Oil SPF 25-50
  • Carrot Seed Oil SPF 35-40

My Daughter Olivia Wearing her shades

My Daughter Olivia Wearing her shades

You'll be happy to know that my lip balms contain shea butter and almond oil, making them a natural SPF 4-6.

2. Be sure to stay away from these specific essential oils in the sunny summer time.

If they contain the chemical bergaptene, you might end up with phototoxicity (burned in the areas you apply the oils):

  • Orange essential oil
  • Lime essential oil
  • Grapefruit essential oil
  • Lemon essential oil
  • Bergamot essential oil

Be sure to avoid the sun, and tanning beds, for up to 12 hours after using these citrus essential oils on your skin so you don't get burned.

3. Look for these two champion ingredients when you pick-out your next bottle of sunscreen:

  • Titanium dioxide
  • Zinc oxide

These are the only two sunscreen ingredients that sit on the top layer of your skin (non-nano).

They won't seep into your bloodstream and disrupt your hormones like the other ones do.

4. Here's a list of some delicious foods that protect your skin naturally:

  • Citrus fruits: Contains Vitamin C which reduces the potential for sunburn.
  • Carrots: The Beta carotene protects skin from free radical damage.
  • Green tea: Contains catechins that prevent sunburn inflammation and long term UV radiation damage.
  • Almonds: Contains Vitamin E which repairs skin from sun damage.

5. A whopping 80% of the population is deficient in Vitamin D. Here are some great ways to get your D in naturally...

  • 15 minutes in the sunlight without sunscreen. Try to go out in the early mornings or later in the afternoon when the sun is less intense.
  • Supplementation might be necessary if your Vitamin D levels are below 12 ng. Talk with your doctor about what dose they recommend. It can range from 600-2000 IU's depending on how deficient you are.

Here are the symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Chronic pain
  • Depression
  • Sweating and elevated body temperature

Foods that contain Vitamin D:

  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Egg yolk
  • Shrimp
  • Milk (fortified)
  • Cereal (fortified)
  • Yogurt (fortified)
  • Orange juice (fortified)

Cheers to your healthy and protected skin. Have a beautiful week!

A Hot Yoga Summer Must Have

Summer Yoga

Yay! Summer's finally here. What a great time of year to take a yoga class and savor each sunshine filled day.

I recently pulled my yoga mat out of the closet (after an embarrassingly long hiatus) and it stunk so bad. Pew!

Olivia and I were attending our first Baby Yoga Class and I had about 10 minutes to spray my mat down with Namaste Yoga Mat Spray and run out the door.

Luckily the tea tree and lavender essential oils got rid of the funky smell and disinfected the mat naturally. I also used the spray right before savasana so we could focus on the lovely scent.

It. Was. Peaceful.

Sending you sweet sunshine vibes.

Is Your Skin As Dry As The Mojave Desert?

drought-780088_1920.jpg

If you've got dry skin, my Oatmeal Bath Recipe and cheesy commentary will help.

Read on, oh dry one.

Yesterday I was chatting on the phone with an old friend of mine, from my little hometown of Manhattan, Illinois, about how freakishly dry the air is in San Diego.

I explained how the air is a lot less humid than what we experienced growing up. (No big hair days. Yes!)

I could only guess what she was thinking, "I'll take dry alligator skin if that means I can enjoy 360 days of sunshine." I don't think she understood my dilemma...

I find myself constantly applying body butter, using aloe body wash, and dry brushing my skin to make it feel "normal" aka moisturized.

Strange question...Do you also embarrassingly scratch your dry thighs when you're in public? I'm trying really hard to break that weird habit. *cheeks turning red*

If you're also suffering from dry skin, here's a simple oatmeal bath soak. It's been a life saver for my skin, and it's super easy to make.

This recipe is also a natural treatment for psoriasis and eczema.

You'll be able to find the ingredients at your local health food store:

Oatmeal Bath Soak
2 cups organic old fashioned oats
5 drops of therapeutic grade lavender essential oil
1 can of coconut milk
4 tbsp aloe vera gel

Did you try it? I'd love to know if my recipe helped you. Please leave a comment below.

Have a moisturizing week!

Rock Those Cute Strappy Sandals, You'll Have Beautiful Toenails This Summer

Are you freaking out about wearing strappy, summer footwear 'cause your toenails are itchy and discolored?

No worries, I've got a magical little bottle that'll treat your funky foot fungus.

Of course, you can always buy a chemical-filled toenail spray at the drug store to treat your toes, but then you'd risk damaging your liver.

Talk about frightennnning

That's why I created this alternative, that's JUST as effective as the chemical stuff.

Let me introduce you to my Anti-Germ thieves blend....

You might be wondering, "What the heck is a thieves blend, Tina?"

Great question! It's a specific blend of therapeutic essential oils, that when combined, is a powerful anti-fungal, antibacterial, and antiviral solution.

It contains pure, therapeutic grade eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender, orange, clove, rosemary, and lemon essential oils.

Plus, the scent will remind you of a spicy chai latte. Heavenly!

Here's the fascinating back-story...

During the old school Bubonic Plague days, four thieves went from house to house to rob those who contracted the illness.

After the thieves were captured and tried for their acts of robbery, a judge offered leniency if they would share theirsecret.

He asked them HOW they were able to rob people with the disease but not contract the illness themselves. They confessed that they used a blend of essential oils to protect themselves! Hence the blend name, "thieves".

It’s also interesting to note that physicians were seen wearing long-beaked masks.

The masks contained a combination of herbs, spices, and essential oils that the physicians would breathe in order to keep themselves safe from those afflicted with the illness.

Cool story, right!?

If your toes are already looking cute, here's some other ways you can use this versatile blend:

  • Natural Hand Sanitizer. Place two drops on your hands and rub together to kill germs.
  • Plane Travel: Place a drop under your nose to combat circulated germy air.
  • Sick Kiddos and family members. Place five drops on the bottoms of their feet.
  • Diffuse throughout the room to kill germs in the air.
  • Pimples: Place a drop on skin flare-ups instead of using those chemical filled zit products.
  • Natural Deodorant: Add this blend to organic coconut oil to make a quick natural deodorant.

DIY Soothing Sunburn Spray

We recently had some friends visit us from the midwest and one of them got a really bad sunburn after hiking in the desert. I was completely out of aloe vera so I was bummed I couldn't help them out.

After doing some research I created an awesome sunburn soothing spray, so if you're burned after visiting the beach this will help you heal naturally.

(I wish I had this on hand when my guests were here.)

Ingredients:

  • 4-ounce spray bottle
  • 1-ounce 100% aloe vera gel
  • 12 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 1/2-ounce witch hazel
  • 2 1/2-ounces distilled water

Refrigerate and shake before applying. (Be sure to test a small amount in the crook of your arm for 24 hours, in case of allergies)

This recipe should soothe and cut down on the healing time.

Share with us how you combat sunburn, burnout by commenting below.

New Himalayan Body Scrub + Clean Hippie Roll On Perfume!

I hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend!

Olivia and I had a blast at the Wanderlust 108 event this past Saturday (It was a mindful triathlon held right here in San Diego)

I had fun teaching a little over 80 fellow yogi's how to incorporate essential oils into their daily lives.

In the class, I explained the history of essential oil's, how to make non-toxic home cleaning products, and even touched on how to decrease medications and replace them with natural alternatives.

This was a great opportunity that opened me up to teaching more classes in the near future!

I'm also so pumped to tell you about my new products!

NEW Body Scrub:  I created a detoxing, exfoliating, and incredibly scented salt scrub you're going to love.

It's a Himalayan and dead sea salt scrub that smells just like our Exotic Body Butter. It contains grapeseed oil, rosehip oil, jasmine, ylang-ylang, gardenia, and lavender essential oils. It's heavenly.

NEW Natural Perfume If you've been a customer of mine for awhile, you might remember our Clean Hippie Bar Soap. Well, everyone commented on how much they loved the smell, so I created a perfume for crunchy mama's who want to smell amazing. :)

It's a fun roll-on perfume that contains patchouli, jasmine, gardenia, and lemongrass.

Wanderlust 108 San Diego, CA

In the pic above, Olivia and I are busy making products for this weekend's adventures.

For the past few months, I've been sticking close to home because I wanted to focus on my little one instead of having a ton of work on my plate.

Recently the folks at Wanderlust 108 contacted me to teach essential oil classes at their mindful triathlon event.

At first, I was hesitant because frankly, I'm a little shy when it comes to public speaking...give me a video camera and no audience and I'm somewhat comfortable. Stick me in front of a ton of people and that's another story.

I finally agreed to play along (biting fingernails) and we'll both be at the event this Saturday. I hope you can join us!

The essential oil classes start at 1:00 PM at Liberty Station. To purchase tickets to the entire event click HERE

No worries if you can't attend this time around; I've partnered with Liquid Eden Holistic Center and I'll be teaching a class on May 12th. (details coming soon)

Have a beautiful weekend!

One Hot Menopausal Momma

relax.jpg

An unfair stigma attaches itself to menopause as if menopause and midlife must be avoided, battled or treated.

Menopause affects each woman a little bit differently.

The hormonal fallout from decreased estrogen levels wreaks physiological and mental havoc, causing women to wonder why their bodies feel foreign and unpredictable.

Menopause can be a gift, signaling a significant physical and spiritual transformation. It can be an opportunity to refocus, recenter and reprioritize ourselves.

It can be a reminder to surround ourselves with love and self-care, especially as we change and evolve.

Purity Apothecary offers therapeutic, organic and handmade products to aide in your self-care journey and relieve symptoms of menopause.

Our Goddess Blend contains geranium and clary sage to help with hormonal regulation and symptoms of depression.

Researchers discovered that inhaling clary sage oil decreased cortisol (the stress hormone) levels by 16-31% and increased 5-HT (5-hydroxytryptamine, a thyroid hormone) up to 484%.

To capture this benefit, rub 1 drop of Goddess on the back of your neck and 1-2 drops onto the tops of your feet. For immediate stress relief, rub 1 drop in the middle of your palms, rub together and inhale.

Tightness around the perineum can be soothed by dropping one drop of Lavender essential oil to a cold washcloth and applying the compress for 15-20 minutes to the irritated area. Be careful to just use one drop, as to not further irritate distressed skin.

Spritz Fresh Lavender Aromatherapy Spray on your bed sheets and pillows to create a relaxing, calming atmosphere in your bedroom when insomnia and night sweats strike.

Soothe your lips and use Peppermint Plump Lip Balm to provide calm relief during hot flashes during the day.

It’s an easy form of relief when a hot flash hits, and you’re in the busy of a hectic work day. Apply Peppermint Plump Lip Balm, inhale and exhale for 5 deep breaths and repeat a calming mantra to cool down your hot flashes, so that you can refocus and recenter.

With some help of a few Purity Apothecary therapeutic products, you can make your journey an opportunity to learn more about yourself and the importance of listening to your body and spirit.

Are You Exhausted in the Afternoon? Try These 5 Invigorating Tips!

haute chocolate styled stock photography summer collection 2 june 2016-3-FINAL.jpg

When do you need an energetic pick-me-up? Some days, there isn’t enough coffee in Colombia to keep me focused and attentive at work.

Other times, a heavier lunch with a client will leave me sluggish.

Sometimes, I extrovert so much that I spend all of my energetic capital on other people before 10 am.

It’s easy to move through the day taking care of business, meeting with clients, planning events, and scheduling family activities without taking the time to replenish my tapped energy reserves.

It’s important to take time, even if you just have a few moments, to nourish and ground yourself. Before reaching for that next cup of coffee, consider trying some of these tips to replenish your energy reserves.

1.  Hydrate. Many slumps in energy result from dehydration. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day can be challenging, and frankly pretty boring.

Muddle ½ cup of cucumber and a generous amount of mint leaves together in a small bowl. Transfer this to a quart of ice water or add a tablespoon of the mixture to a glass or bottle of ice water. Drink and enjoy!

2.  Wake yourself up from a midday slump with Invigorate Essential Oil Blend. Invigorate energizes your senses with this special blend of orange, grapefruit, ginger and lemongrass.

Rub two drops into the palm of your hands and breathe in the relaxing citrus scent or add 2-3 drops to a diffuser for an instant mood booster.

3.  Energize the air around you with 2 drops of black pepper and 2 drops of rosemary in a diffuser.

Black pepper increases alertness and wards off stress with its soft, woody fragrance. Rosemary increases focus, so using both essential oils will make mid-morning tasks more pleasant.

4. Pamper your pout with Peppermint Plump Lip Balm. In addition to making your lips soft and plump, this handmade lip balm will activate your sense of smell.

Your lips will feel soft and cool, and the soft mint scent will add a little "pep" in your step.

5.  Stuck indoors and restless? Add 1-2 drops of pine oil to a diffuser. On top of reminding you of your favorite hiking spot or vacation getaway, pine oil purifies the air and kills germs.

A few drops in a diffuser will instantly activate your hippocampus and brighten your mood.

Don't Hit the Snooze Button...Try these Essential Oils Instead

A wellness lifestyle includes a dedication to pursue relaxing, quality sleep. Many of us stay active, nourish our bodies with healthy food, stimulate our minds by actively learning, and feed our souls by connecting with the people around us.

According to the American Psychological Association, 60% of adults reporting experiencing sleep problems a few nights a week or more. Stress and the inability to relax causes the highest incidences of sleep disturbances.

Integrate Purity Apothecary’s essential oils and aromatherapy products into your nightly sleep protocol. When you inhale an aromatherapy molecule through your nose, it affects the brain through various receptor sites, most notably the limbic system.

The limbic system has a reputation for being the emotional center of the brain. De-stressing through the use of wholesome organic aromatherapy products helps the limbic system relax for a better night’s sleep.

For a relaxing pre-bedtime bath, make a cup of chamomile tea, and fill a hot bath with two cups of Epsom salts 2-3 drops of Chill Pill. The lavender, chamomile, vanilla, ylang ylang and bergamot will melt away your anxiety and stress. It will comfort you after a long day, and return you to your center.

After your bath, create a soothing atmosphere for sleep in your bedroom. Treat your bedroom like a sanctuary. It’s the place that holds your dreams. Spritz Fresh Lavender handmade linen spray on your blankets and pillows. In your bed, you are safe and comfortable and relaxed.

Apply 1-2 drops of Chill Pill or Goddess Essential Oil blends to your collarbone. Close your eyes and take 10 deep breaths. Repeat a positive mantra, and drift to sleep.

Moisturizer Doesn't Work

Body Butter.jpg

I get asked on a daily basis...

"How can I get glowing youthful skin?" Surprisingly a lot of women head straight for the moisturizer.  It always shocks them when I reveal that moisturizing isn't the answer.

Exfoliation is the key.

Exfoliating your skin is the most important step in your skin care regimen.

As we age our Cell Renewal Factor (CRF) or cell turnover rate slows down. Cell turnover is the process by which our skin produces new skin cells which travel from the lowest layer of the epidermis to the top layer and then shed off the skin. This is what keeps dead cells from building up on the skins surface.

Our CRF (Cell Renewal Factor) changes as we age:

Babies – 14 days
Teenagers – 21 – 28 days
Middle age – 28 – 42 days
50 and up – 42 – 84 days

That means that as we age, the top layer of the skin, the one we see, touch, and even agonize over, becomes dull.  We lose our “glow”.  And, think about this, if the top layer of your skin is really lots of dead skin cells (between 15 to 20 layers), how much of those moisturizers you are applying are actually getting through and doing what they are supposed to be doing?

That is why estheticians and dermatologists will encourage their clients to practice mild exfoliation as part of their daily skin care regimen, to help keep the top layer of skin from getting too thick with dead skin cells.

Knowledge is power...and knowing exactly what ingredients your putting on your face can mean the difference between looking radiant, or doing permanent damage to your cells.

You can rest assured that we will NEVER add parabens, man-made fragrances, or any other toxic chemicals to our products.  These ingredients increase the aging process and can cause allergic reactions.

10 Ways To Use an Essential Oil Blend

Essential_Oils.jpeg

Conventional perfume is pretty boring: you spray it on.

But with essential oils, you’re able to incorporate them into your beauty routine, cleaning solutions, and throughout your home and office.

I personally use a diffuser daily to help keep my home smelling amazing and to set the tone for the day.  Plus, you're not exposing yourself to man-made chemicals.

How do you want to feel when you get ready in the morning? How do you want to feel when you meditate at night? What about when you soak in a warm bath...

Having a stressed out Monday morning? I recommend our Chill Pill Blend.

As you probably already know, essential oils are the most powerful components of a plant concentrated into a small amount of liquid.

So the question I'm answering today is: how do you use them?

And more specifically: how do you use an essential oil blend?

Essential oil blends combine several essential oils together, giving you well-rounded benefits and a more complex fragrance experience.

For example, if you want a relaxing experience, you can use a blend of lavender and ylang-ylang. The possibilities are endless.

Here are 10 ways you can use essential oil blends:

1. Laundry

After your washer has filled with water and you’ve added your detergent, add about 5 drops of essential oils that smells heavenly.

Or, add a couple drops to a dry piece of cotton and use that instead of dryer sheets.  Dryer sheets contain a ton of chemicals.

2. A Few Drops on Your Wrists and Neck

The simplest way to use an essential oil is to dab a couple drops onto your wrists, similarly to how you’d use perfume.

Of course, you’ll want to choose an essential oil that you really love, and it’s important to do a patch test first before putting an essential oil directly on your skin.

3. In a Diffuser

Using a diffuser with essential oils is an easy way to make your space smell amazing and use aromatherapy to help shape your day. At work? Perhaps an energizing Invigorate blend. In a melancholy mood? The Comfort blend is great at lifting your spirits.

There are lots of different types of diffusers, from the simple candlelit type to those that plug in and spray an oil-infused mist. Amazon has a great selection of inexpensive diffusers.

4. In your Bath

A few drops of essential oil in your bath will take romance to the next level. Be sure to check your email for our new aroma-perfume roll-on's coming out just in time for Valentine's Day!

I also recommend 5 drops of our Tension Ease in the tub to ease achy muscles, joints, and arthritis.

5. Carrier Oil

For those with sensitive skin, you may favor mixing your essential oils with a carrier oil. This way, you dilute the powerful properties of the essential oil and can apply it just like you would a moisturizer.

Examples of carrier oils are coconut, jojoba, avocado, almond and grapeseed.

6. Just to Smell

You can enjoy the aromatherapy of your essential oil blend without even taking it out of the bottle.

Simply open up the bottle and smell. This can be really helpful before a job interview, or before a date.

7. Refreshing Hair

We recommend not washing your hair everyday, and using essential oils is great way to keep it smelling lovely in between. I love adding a couple drops to coconut oil to moisturize split ends and perfume my hair simultaneously.

I also like mixing my essential oils with apple cider vinegar and water in a little spray bottle to help balance the pH of my hair while giving it a lasting aroma.

8. For Cleaning

Tons of natural cleaning recipes call for essential oils, like our bathtub scrub, counter top cleaner and carpeting refresher. You can download them here.

You may also like putting a couple drops of essential oils in your vacuum cleaner bag, or on a few cotton balls and leave them at the bottom of your garbage can.

9. Room & Body Spray

If you don’t want to invest in a diffuser, you can create an aromatherapy linen/body spray and spritz it around your room, your clothes, or even on your pillow.

10. In the Garden

Are Aphids bugging your garden?  Try a peppermint essential oil and a neem oil combo.  Use our Bug Repel essential oil blend on a few cotton balls to keep ants and spiders at bay.

Juice Your Way To Beautiful Skin: 5 Recipes We Love

Hello Beautiful,

If you're using natural plant based skin care, you're already doing amazing things for your skin.

If you feel like your skin needs a little pick-me-up check out our favorite 5 Juicing Recipes for Beautiful Skin listed below.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body.  It's your protective covering and your first line of defense to fight illness and disease. It's also a direct passageway to your bloodstream.

That being said, what you apply topically on your skin, as well as what you eat, will affect its overall health & appearance.

Nicholas Perricone, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, and author of Ageless Face, Ageless Mind said, “Certain foods have powerhouse ingredients that keep skin supple and smooth and help fight age-related damage.”

What are these foods? Fresh fruits and vegetables! And, what is one of the quickest ways to get these powerhouse ingredients into your body? Juicing!

Did you know that when you make juice from raw vegetables, your body absorbs the nutrients within 15 seconds?

We're specifically talking about freshly made juice, and not the sugary, processed juices that you'll find at the grocery store.

When you juice your fruits and veggies, you end up extracting all the water and nutrients from them and leave behind only the plant fibers.

By separating the fruit or vegetable from its fiber, you get all of the amazing vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and phytonutrients which are much more easily assimilated by your body than if you were to eat them.

This allows your body to absorb the nutrients more quickly, without having to digest the dense bulk of the plant.

You can also fit an amazing amount of veggies into a single glass of juice, making it a great way to use up those extra veggies!

You're an Amazing Person

I'm absolutely blown away at how much you've grown in 2016.

2015 was a challenge for many of us.  Through this challenge we learned to simplify our lives, cut back on what no longer served us, and grew into a more grounded version of ourselves.

I personally gave away a lot of clothing, decluttered my home, and quit a few of the projects I was working on to make space for something more fulfilling.

I said goodbye to the Army Reserves because it wasn't my true calling and every time I went to my drill weekends I got a pit in my stomach and felt lethargic.  My body was definitely telling me something... there's more out there than just feeling "secure" and getting a steady paycheck.

There's a life of fullfillment that we all really crave.  To find our true potential and to make a difference.

Do you ever notice that when you give away the "junk" that's piling up it automatically makes room for time, patience, and a feeling of freedom?

To Make YOUR Life Shine!

I've recently started teaching essential oil classes and it's been transformative, to say the least.

I knew in my heart of hearts that I was a leader, a teacher, and loved to help others, but I was always stuck on HOW to go about doing this.

Once I started sharing these gifts doors opened and ease and happiness flowed in. Follow what you love and I know ease and happiness will appear for you too.

Blessings, Tina
